Our 14 year old son is Autistic… severely. There is no candy-coating it or shrugging it off. It is serious and a constant source of intense stress for everyone in the family. We are wayyyy past the early phases of pre-six ABA hopes and dreams, or miraculous changes around age 10, that all parents with Autistic children (really autistic here, not the high functioning) pray for.

Anyhoo, our focus is not only surviving the teenage years, but towards what it means to be an Adult with Autism. There is not alot out there, as most attention is given to the lucrative and profitable childhood affliction where the money is to be had. Sad, but true. My wife is active on facebook with a group of people who are dealing with similar situations as we are… some a bit further down the road… and, it is not encouraging! Again, sad, but true.

Well, there is very little material available on Adult Autism and even less that is not oriented to the professional such as diagnosis and studies. Last time we were down in Seattle visiting our Son’s Neurologist, they had a reading copy in the lobby of an interesting book. Autism through the Lifespan – The Eden Model by David L. Homes (ISBN: 093314928X), even here though only about a chapter applies, chapter 9: Adults with Autism.

If you are interested in this subject, I would encourage you to check it out. You can get a used copy for almost nothing, and with such an absence of applicable material, it is a nugget to be enjoyed.

This seasons toy, games, and puzzles are selling like crazy! Every year it seems we are, like, “Christmas sales are a real opportunity, we should focus on listing toys and stuff.”, and every year it seems like most of the potential left unexploited until too late and it is a new year.

Well, not THIS YEAR! This year our orders for non-media items seem to be catching up with our regular media type things… and, the strongest going is…

Littlest Pet Shop Virtual Interactive Pets!

We are picking up multiples of brand new items from retailers as well as thrift stores at prices that allow us to make a profit! But, what is more, the demand is such that prices are transcending original retail prices!

For example, the VIP Cat is obviously the big Winner! So far, we have sold more than a few and have had a couple more come into inventory just today. And, the price just keeps going up! The last one went for $39 and we have repriced these at $42. I think the first sold for $24.

Besides the Cat, the VIP Bunny seems to be in demand.

Check out our current inventory at http://www.amazon.com/shops/briteday

We also have the Duck, Horse, Panda, Dog, and Monkey available. And, more being discovered daily!

Just had to share this with the world! This musical instrument is soooo innovative! I was surfing youtube for music to listen to, and my all time favorite group is Gentle Giant. So, I was search on that and found this Rob Martino guy that plays one of their songs. Cool. But, what he uses is something called a “Stick”. And, the sound is fantastic!

Now, looking further into it, turns out that this guy is one of the best at it that I could find. But, the instrument is still very powerful, giving a string player (actually called “tapping”) and ability to play many parts at the same time much as a piano player can. Well, I have played the piano for about 40 years and have been a “table top tapper” for as long! It is very exciting to consider the potential here. Unfortunately, you still have to adjust frets and bridges and torque and… okay, I would be one of those people who buy it but never really use it. But, I love the sound… listen to this!

Listening to one of my favorite CD of all time… Burning the Process by Pressure 4-5.

Pressure 4-5 expresses the optimistic, positive, mind-over-matter sides of life with rhythms that range from depressing and melodic heavy metal to upfront rap-metal conquering the negative via uplifting messages.

Hard to find sounds but well worth it when found! I sometimes like hard hitting head banging rock, but dislike the morbid gore and death worshipping crap that so many bands adopt. Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie have some great sounds, but their motif sucks. This band pumps up the energy, but focus on positive uplifting messages, without dripping cliche Jesus Ass Kissing and such that goes too far the other end of the spectrum. Use this link and check it out… you may have just found something you were looking for too!

A little grey curl from my father’s head
I find unburned on the hearth,
And give it a place in my diary here,
With a feeling half sadness, half mirth.
For the long white locks are our special pride,
Though he smiles at his daughter’s praise;
But, oh, they have grown each year more thin,
Till they are now but a silvery haze.

That wise old head! (though it does grow bald
With the knocks hard fortune may give)
Has a store of faith and hope and trust,
Which have taught him how to live.
Though the hat be old, there’s a face below
Which telleth to those who look
The history of a good man’s life,
And it cheers like a blessed book.

[A]A peddler of jewels, of clocks, and of books,
Many a year of his wandering youth;
A peddler still, with a far richer pack,
His wares are wisdom and love and truth.
But now, as then, few purchase or pause,
For he cannot learn the tricks of trade;
Little silver he wins, but that which time
Is sprinkling thick on his meek old head.

But there’ll come a day when the busy world,
Grown sick with its folly and pride,
Will remember the mild-faced peddler then
Whom it rudely had set aside;
Will remember the wares he offered it once
And will seek to find him again,
Eager to purchase truth, wisdom, and love,
But, oh, it will seek him in vain.

It will find but his footsteps left behind
Along the byways of life,
Where he patiently walked, striving the while
To quiet its tumult and strife.
But the peddling pilgrim has laid down his pack
And gone with his earnings away;
How small will they seem, remembering the debt
Which the world too late would repay.

God bless the dear head! and crown it with years
Untroubled and calmly serene;
That the autumn of life more golden may be
For the heats and the storms that have been.
My heritage none can ever dispute,
My fortune will bring neither strife nor care;
‘Tis an honest name, ’tis a beautiful life,
And the silver lock of my father’s hair.

Okay, recommendation time. As you may already clued in on, we tend to be eclectic, picking the best out of a diverse offering. And, I have come across just such an item. While using the process documented in the post:

How To Make Your Own Custom Best Of CD

I found a group that passed the point of mere single song mp3 download purchase to the album purchase! It is a group named Mutemath

and the album has the same name. Not only have I bought it, but it is listened to regularly and excellent background music while we work.

The sound is reminiscent of Police or Sting with kind of a feeling like ColdPlay (which is a very popular group these days!). It is NOT System Of A Down or some of that attention grabbing music, yet it is more than mere easy listening. There are a few great songs that are only available on the album. I think all the songs are winners, but a few are, hmmm, special. Truly a worthwhile group to check out if you are looking for some new music to listen to.
