Adult Autism Book

Our 14 year old son is Autistic… severely. There is no candy-coating it or shrugging it off. It is serious and a constant source of intense stress for everyone in the family. We are wayyyy past the early phases of pre-six ABA hopes and dreams, or miraculous changes around age 10, that all parents with Autistic children (really autistic here, not the high functioning) pray for.

Anyhoo, our focus is not only surviving the teenage years, but towards what it means to be an Adult with Autism. There is not alot out there, as most attention is given to the lucrative and profitable childhood affliction where the money is to be had. Sad, but true. My wife is active on facebook with a group of people who are dealing with similar situations as we are… some a bit further down the road… and, it is not encouraging! Again, sad, but true.

Well, there is very little material available on Adult Autism and even less that is not oriented to the professional such as diagnosis and studies. Last time we were down in Seattle visiting our Son’s Neurologist, they had a reading copy in the lobby of an interesting book. Autism through the Lifespan – The Eden Model by David L. Homes (ISBN: 093314928X), even here though only about a chapter applies, chapter 9: Adults with Autism.

If you are interested in this subject, I would encourage you to check it out. You can get a used copy for almost nothing, and with such an absence of applicable material, it is a nugget to be enjoyed.
